The Qin Lake Scenic Area, known for its picturesque landscapes, recently witnessed a remarkable transformation at its main entrance. The original building, while unique in its polyline shape, presented a rigid facade that failed to blend with the surrounding architecture. The challenge for designers Jun Tang and Yaozong Han was to enhance the building's quality, adapt it to current space needs, and infuse it with a new lease of life as an urban exhibition hall.
Within a limited transformation scope and with a keen eye on cost control, the design duo decided to remove the building's original outer skin. They redesigned the west side facade with a wind curtain wall, a decision that not only met the entrance function requirements but also enriched the building's aesthetic appeal. The east side of the building was adorned with a perforated aluminum curtain wall, adding depth to the facade through an interplay of light and shadow.
The choice of materials was crucial in achieving the desired effect. Stainless steel with a certain degree of reflectivity was used as the surface material for the wind curtain wall, enhancing the building's interaction with its environment. The main materials used in the transformation were aluminum, steel, and glass, all chosen for their durability and aesthetic appeal.
The project, which spanned from April 2018 to March 2019, was carried out by the Shanghai Tongyuan Architecture Design Co., Ltd. team, including Jun Tang, Yaozong Han, Tao Yang, and Shengxiang Li. The team's innovative approach to building renovation earned them the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade that recognizes remarkable designs demonstrating outstanding expertise and innovation.
The transformation of the Qin Lake entrance building serves as a testament to the power of innovative design in reviving architecture. It stands as a beacon of harmonious coexistence between architecture and the environment, a concept that Jun Tang and Yaozong Han have masterfully brought to life. The project is a shining example of how thoughtful design can transform a space, improving its functionality while enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
In the words of the designers, "adapting to times-adapting to local conditions" might just be the key to achieving a harmonious coexistence with the environment. This philosophy, as demonstrated in the Qin Lake project, is a guiding principle for future architectural transformations, inspiring designers to create spaces that not only serve their purpose but also blend seamlessly with their surroundings.
